Organic products are seeing strong growth in the otherwise stagnant Dutch food market. This conclusion was published in the 2010 Biomonitor. 2010 saw Dutch consumers buy more organic foods, the tenth consecutive year of growth! Turnover grew by over 13%. Supermarkets did especially good business. Potatoes, fruit and vegetables still represent the largest organic product group in the Dutch market.

In total, Dutch consumers spent 752.1 million Euros on organic food in 2010, which is 87 million more than the figure for 2009. This represents a growth of over 13%, against a backdrop of stagnating overall food consumption in the Netherlands. Supermarkets are the most important sales channel for organic products. Of all organic products sold on the Dutch market, 45.3% found their way to consumers through a supermarket. The supermarket sector saw turnover for organic products grow by 18.8%.

Organic produce represents the most successful fresh product group in the Dutch organic food market. Potatoes, fruit and vegetables continue to lead, making up 21.9% of consumer spending on organic products. Dairy products (17.1%) and meat/prepared meat products (14.9%) come second and third, respectively.

Overall, Dutch consumers spent more on organic potatoes, fruit and vegetables, with sales rising by 11.1% from 148.2 million Euros to 164.4% million in 2010. Organic vegetables remain the largest product group with the organic potatoes, fruit and vegetable group. The largest growth was seen in the preserves/frozen foods group. The turnover for organic fruit is also growing. Naturelle is also seeing rising demand for organic fruit.

Supermarkets remain the largest sales channel by far for organic potatoes, fruit and vegetables in the Netherlands.

Other sales channels include farmers’ markets, farm sales, online stores, fruit and vegetable subscriptions and delivery services. Naturelle products are available at most Dutch supermarkets.
